Carbon Monoxide Safety in Surrey — What You Need to Know
Carbon monoxide (CO) is produced when gas appliances — boilers, gas fires, cookers, or any fuel-burning device — burn fuel incompletely. It’s odourless, colourless and tasteless, which is why it’s called the “silent killer.” Approximately 60 people die from accidental CO poisoning every year in the UK, and hundreds more are hospitalised. In Surrey, as in the rest of the country, CO poisoning from poorly maintained gas appliances remains a genuine risk.
247 Plumber Surrey provides CO alarm installation, gas appliance safety inspections and emergency response to carbon monoxide incidents across all of Surrey — from Guildford and Woking to Reigate, Farnham and every town and village in the county.
Signs of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
CO symptoms are often confused with flu or food poisoning, which is one reason CO poisoning can go unrecognised until it’s serious. Key differences: CO symptoms typically affect everyone in the household at the same time, improve when you leave the house, and pets may be affected before humans (animals are more sensitive to CO). Common symptoms include:
- Headaches — often described as a dull, persistent ache
- Dizziness and feeling faint
- Nausea and vomiting
- Shortness of breath and difficulty breathing
- Confusion and difficulty concentrating
- Chest pain (with high CO levels)
- Loss of consciousness (with high or prolonged exposure)
If you suspect CO poisoning: Leave the building immediately, get fresh air, call 999 if anyone is feeling unwell, then call 0800 111 999 (National Gas Emergency). Do NOT go back into the property until it has been declared safe by a Gas Safe engineer.
What Triggers a CO Alarm?
CO alarms are triggered by elevated levels of carbon monoxide in the air — typically above 10–35 parts per million (ppm) for prolonged exposure, depending on the alarm type. If your CO alarm sounds, the most likely causes are:
Faulty or Poorly Serviced Boiler
The most common cause of CO build-up in Surrey homes. A boiler that hasn’t been serviced recently, has a cracked heat exchanger, blocked flue or insufficient combustion air supply can produce CO. This is why annual boiler servicing by a Gas Safe engineer is so important.
Blocked or Damaged Flue
If the flue that exhausts combustion gases from your boiler or gas fire becomes blocked — by birds’ nests, debris, ice or physical damage — combustion gases (including CO) can leak back into the property. We inspect flues as part of all boiler services.
Gas Fires and Open Fires
Gas fires, particularly older open-flued models, can produce CO if the chimney or flue is blocked, if there’s insufficient room ventilation, or if the burner is faulty. Solid fuel fires and woodburning stoves can also produce CO if the chimney is partially blocked or draughted incorrectly.
Gas Cookers
A gas cooker with a yellow or orange flame rather than blue is producing excessive CO. This usually indicates incomplete combustion — a clogged burner or insufficient gas pressure. Ensure adequate kitchen ventilation when using a gas cooker.
CO Alarm Installation in Surrey
Since October 2022, it is a legal requirement for all homes in England with any fixed gas, oil, solid fuel, or combustion appliances to have at least one CO alarm installed. This includes rental properties — landlords who fail to provide CO alarms face fines of up to £5,000. 247 Plumber Surrey installs CO alarms throughout Surrey:
- Where we fit them: In the same room as each gas appliance — typically the boiler room/utility, living room (if gas fire), kitchen (if gas cooker)
- Alarm types: Battery-powered, mains-wired, and combination smoke/CO alarms
- Brands we recommend: Kidde, FireAngel, Nest Protect, Aico
- Testing: We test each alarm after installation and show you how to test it yourself
Gas Appliance Safety Inspections
If your CO alarm has sounded, or if you’re concerned about the safety of your gas appliances, we provide a full safety inspection service. Our Gas Safe engineers will:
- Test all gas appliances for CO production using an electronic combustion analyser
- Check flue integrity and seals on all appliances
- Test room ventilation and combustion air supply
- Inspect gas pipework for leaks using electronic detection equipment
- Issue a Gas Safety Record documenting all test results
- Identify and immediately rectify any dangerous appliances (RIDDOR reporting where required)
Frequently Asked Questions — Carbon Monoxide Safety Surrey
What should I do if my CO alarm goes off?
Leave the property immediately, taking everyone (including pets) with you. Do not operate any electrical switches. Get fresh air. Call 999 if anyone feels unwell. Call 0800 111 999 (National Gas Emergency). Then call us on 0800 999 1609 — we can carry out an emergency inspection once the property has been cleared.
How long do CO alarms last?
Most CO alarms have a lifespan of 7–10 years. After this they must be replaced — the sensor degrades over time. The manufacture date is usually printed on the back of the alarm. Replace any alarm older than 7 years.
Is it a legal requirement to have a CO alarm in Surrey?
Yes, since October 2022 it has been a legal requirement in England (including Surrey) to have a CO alarm in every room with a gas, oil or solid fuel appliance. Landlords face fines of up to £5,000 for non-compliance. Owner-occupiers are strongly advised to comply for their family’s safety.
