Common Oil Boiler Faults We Repair
Oil Boiler Won’t Fire / No Ignition
The most common oil boiler fault. Causes include a faulty oil burner (electrodes, photocell, nozzle), blocked oil filter, air in the oil line, contaminated oil (water in the oil tank), or a failed oil pump. We carry out a full burner service and diagnostic to identify the exact cause. In most cases we can rectify this on the first visit.
Oil Boiler Locking Out on Safety
Most oil boilers have a lockout button — a red reset button that trips when the boiler fails to ignite safely. If this trips repeatedly, there’s an underlying issue that needs diagnosing rather than simply resetting. Common causes include a clogged nozzle, failing solenoid valve, or photocell failure.
Sooty or Smoky Exhaust
Black smoke from the flue indicates incomplete combustion — often caused by a worn nozzle, incorrect air/fuel mixture, or a dirty heat exchanger. This reduces efficiency significantly and causes soot deposits. A full burner service corrects this.
Oil Smell
